The title of this course says, "Critical Thinking." No doubt you've seen the two words before, perhaps even together, but you still may not be sure just what they mean in this configuration. Perhaps one way we can back into an answer is to think about other occasions when we use the word "thinking." There are, for instance, those moments when we are "lost in thought," musing on some past experience, or "just thinking." Stuff is flowing through our minds but we're not inspecting the results. As a result, sometimes we find the drift of our ideas carrying us to places we never intended to go. The word "critical" stems from "critic," the ancient Greek word for the citizens who sat in judgment on the lawsuits that occupied much of Athens' attention in the fifth and fourth centuries B. The arguments pro and con, the two cases, are presented by the contending parties below.
